How we pick a route, and when we skip training
Aranv helps you train your own AI model when prompts and retrieval fall short: a small language model (SLM) for one narrow job or a large language model (LLM) for many tasks in one domain, adapted from open-weight base weights on your reviewed data and run where your company controls it.
Start with the case against training. If staff need answers from policies, price lists or manuals that change, prompts plus retrieval are often enough, and we will say so. Most businesses should not train a model from zero either. We normally start from open-weight base weights and fine-tune or adapt them.
If behavior is the gap, three routes remain. LLM fine-tuning changes one behavior on an existing model. A small language model takes one narrow job. Custom LLM development covers many tasks in one domain. Our guides on how to train your own LLM and SLM vs LLM cover the steps and trade-offs.
Deciding how far to go
Four checks before you commit
- 01 Score the simple setup We test prompts plus retrieval on your own cases and keep the scores.
- 02 Name the gap One behavior, one narrow job, or many tasks across one domain.
- 03 Read the license, then train Base-model terms come first. Your reviewed examples go into training runs after that.
- 04 Compare and decide If the trained model loses to the baseline, the simpler setup stays in place.
Retrieval supplies facts that change. A trained model supplies behavior: format, labels, tone, domain language and narrow skills.
Custom AI model training: pick a route
Three routes differ in size and scope, and the fourth decides where the result runs.
-

Fine-tune one behavior
An open-weight model learns a single habit from your examples, such as the layout of your returns memo or the labels on your tickets.
-

Small model, narrow job
A small language model adapted to one job, such as sorting inbound requests or pulling fields from one form type.
-

Larger model, one domain
A custom LLM trained on a large body of your text and shared across search, extraction, drafting and classification in the same field.
-

Private deployment
Whichever route you take, the trained model can sit in a cloud account you hold or on servers you run, behind your sign-in.
LLM or SLM: how we choose
Size follows the job. One task with a fixed output points toward a small model; many tasks sharing heavy domain language point toward a larger one. We do not assume either wins: candidates run your test set and you see the results side by side.
What we do
- Number of distinct tasks
- Error rate on your test set
- Response time on target hardware
- Hardware needed at peak load
- Running cost at your real volume
What you own at the end
Ownership is written into the contract up front, before work starts. We recommend an agreement where the weights, adapters, code, training data and test sets pass to you after payment for the work. The base-model license still applies, and its limits carry over to anything built on it.
What we do
- Model weights or adapters
- Reviewed training data
- Gold test sets and scores
- Retraining scripts
- Written summary of base-license limits
How we approach a project
Every route depends on its examples. LLM training data work turns tickets, documents and records into pairs your subject experts approve, with your data used for your model. LLM evaluation then scores each candidate against the baseline on a test set kept out of training.
The finished model needs a home: private LLM deployment installs it in a cloud account you hold or on your own servers. Reasons to train differ by department: a custom LLM for customer support learns resolution notes and escalation habits, while one for legal teams learns clause labels and review formats. Software teams can train an LLM on their codebase. To talk it through, book a 30-minute conversation.
How we work
- Simplest setup that passes your test
- Open-weight base, not training from zero
- Examples your own experts reviewed
-
Write the test set first
Your experts choose real cases and approve the correct output. Those cases stay out of training and decide every comparison.
-
Run the plain baseline
We build the best prompts and retrieval we can and score them. Some needs end here, which is a fair outcome.
-
Prepare data and train
After the license check, reviewed examples feed training runs on the chosen route.
-
Compare, release, retrain
The winner goes live with monitoring. Reviewed staff corrections join the next round on an agreed schedule.
Why Aranv for your own model
We may talk you out
If the baseline holds on your test set, we keep it and say so. A trained model adds a pipeline someone must run, so it has to earn that.
Licenses read before training
Base models come with terms on use and redistribution. We read them first and write down what they mean for your product.
Your experts set the standard
People on your team who do the work approve the examples and the test set, so the model learns their judgment.
Connected where staff work
A trained model sits behind an internal API your CRM, helpdesk or document system can call, and staff can flag bad answers.
Custom models by business use, with services and guides
Custom LLM for Customer Support
A custom LLM for customer support, tuned on your closed tickets and macros for tone, labels, routing and reply drafts, then tested against retrieval.
Custom LLM for Legal Teams
A custom LLM for legal teams, tuned on your clause library, playbooks and past redlines, with lawyers reviewing all output and citations tied to sources.
Custom LLM for Healthcare
A custom LLM for healthcare paperwork: structuring notes, drafting prior authorization letters and suggesting codes, with a clinician or coder reviewing.
Custom LLM for Financial Services
A custom LLM for financial services: field extraction, document classification and credit memo drafts in house format, with staff keeping lending decisions.
Custom LLM for Manufacturing
A custom LLM for manufacturing, tuned on maintenance logs, work instructions and part codes, often on site, with technicians confirming safety steps.
Train an LLM on Your Codebase
Train an LLM on your codebase only when retrieval falls short. We scan for secrets and licenses, test on real merged changes and keep your reviewers in place.
Custom LLM Development
Custom LLM development for firms with a large body of domain text: one model for search, extraction, drafting and classification, tested task by task.
Small Language Model Development
Small language model development for one job: classifying, extracting fields or drafting one document type, tuned on your examples, tested on your hardware.
LLM Training Data Services
LLM training data built from your tickets and documents: reviewed instruction and answer pairs, gold test sets, masked personal details and dataset versions.
Fine-Tuned Model Migration
Fine-tuned model migration for teams on OpenAI's fine-tuning platform: inventory, a test set of current behavior, a new target, side-by-side runs, rollback.
How to Train Your Own LLM
How to train your own LLM: pick one job, set a baseline with prompts and retrieval, fine-tune an open-weight base on reviewed examples, then test it.
SLM vs LLM
SLM vs LLM compared fairly: hardware, cost per request, speed, reasoning depth, data control and tuning effort, plus how teams route work between the two.
What Is a Small Language Model?
What is a small language model? A plain definition of an SLM for business readers: its size, real examples, what it does well, its limits and where it runs.
Custom LLM Cost
Custom LLM cost explained without price tags: what drives the budget, why data work often leads it, how to compare token fees and how to reduce the total.
How Much Data to Train an LLM
How much data to train an LLM depends on the route: what vendor minimums say, why coverage beats volume and what to do when you have too few examples.
OpenAI Fine-Tuning Alternatives
OpenAI fine-tuning alternatives after the wind-down: stay until your base model retires, tune an open-weight model, use another cloud or improve prompts.

Train Your Own AI Model FAQs
-
Do we actually need to train our own AI model?
Often not at first. Test prompts plus retrieval on your own cases, because that setup is quicker to build and change. Consider training when format, labels, tone or domain language stay wrong after that work.
-
Is it worth trying to train your own LLM from scratch?
For nearly every small or midsize business, no. Training from zero takes a huge body of text, long compute runs and specialist staff. We normally adapt open-weight base weights instead, so the work goes into your domain behavior.
-
What does custom LLM training need from our team?
It needs a subject expert with regular time, past work such as tickets, reports or approved drafts, and someone who can decide what correct output looks like. You also confirm your right to use that material for training.
-
Will a trained model know our latest prices and policies?
Not reliably. A model only knows what it saw during training, so prices, policies and other changing facts belong in retrieval. A common design uses both: retrieval finds current facts, and the trained model writes the answer your team expects.
-
What drives the cost of training a custom model?
Cost mostly follows how much data needs reviewing, the route you take, the training runs needed to beat the baseline and where the model runs afterward. An estimate follows a short trial on your data.
-
How long does it take to train a custom model?
Expect weeks to months rather than days. Collecting and reviewing examples usually takes longest. We agree a plan after the baseline test, when the size of the gap is known.
