React Native or Flutter: which fits
Aranv’s answer on Flutter vs React Native: both build solid iOS and Android apps from one codebase, so choose React Native when your team already works in React and TypeScript, and choose Flutter when you want one consistent, highly custom interface drawn the same way on every device.
When React Native fits. Companies with a React web app, an in-house JavaScript team or a wish to follow each platform’s native look usually do well with React Native. Our React Native app development page covers new builds and upgrades of older versions, and React development covers the web side.
When Flutter fits. Brand-led apps with custom visuals, animation-heavy screens or a need to match pixel for pixel across devices suit Flutter, as do teams that also want desktop builds from the same code. Our Flutter app development team covers new apps and adding Flutter screens to existing ones.
How the two frameworks work
Flutter and React Native compared
- 01 Language Flutter uses Dart; React Native uses JavaScript or TypeScript with React.
- 02 Rendering Flutter draws every pixel itself; React Native renders the platform’s own native views.
- 03 Architecture React Native now runs only on its New Architecture; Flutter compiles Dart to native code.
- 04 Packages Flutter packages live on pub.dev; React Native draws on npm and Expo tooling.
Either framework can call Swift or Kotlin code when a feature is missing, so neither one is a dead end.
Flutter vs React Native: four practical differences
A cross-platform framework comparison is most useful when it starts from your app and your people.
Team skills
Web teams that know React and TypeScript move to React Native quickly. Flutter means learning Dart, which is easy for developers who know Java, Kotlin or TypeScript.
Interface control
Flutter renders its own widgets, so custom designs look identical on every phone. React Native uses native components, so screens follow iOS and Android conventions by default.
Code shared with web
React Native can share business logic, types and some components with a React web app. Flutter also builds for the web, best for app-like tools rather than content sites.
AI features
Both call cloud model APIs in the same way. On-device models and camera-based features rely on plugins or native modules, which exist for both frameworks.
Inside a React Native project
A React Native app is written in TypeScript with React components that map to native iOS and Android views. The React Native docs recommend starting new apps with a framework such as Expo, which handles builds, updates and many device APIs, with Swift or Kotlin modules only where no package exists.
What we do
- TypeScript and React components
- Expo builds and app updates
- Native modules in Swift or Kotlin
- Shared logic with React web apps
- Unit and on-device end-to-end tests
Inside a Flutter project
A Flutter app is written in Dart, with widgets that Flutter draws itself, so one design renders the same on every device. Platform channels connect to Swift or Kotlin code when a package is missing, and the same project can also build for web and desktop.
What we do
- Dart widgets and custom themes
- Pixel-consistent design across devices
- Platform channels to native code
- Web and desktop builds possible
- Widget and integration tests
How we approach a project
When neither is right. Apps built around specialist hardware, heavy 3D or the newest OS features may be better native. Our native vs cross-platform guide explains that decision, and the mobile app development hub lists every platform we build for.
How we work
- Match the framework to your team
- Check packages before committing
- Plan upgrades from the first sprint
Our Process
-
Audit your team’s skills
Note who will maintain the app in two years and which languages they already use.
-
List required packages
Check payment, maps, camera, Bluetooth and analytics packages for active upkeep in both ecosystems.
-
Prototype the hardest screen
If the choice is close, build your most complex screen in each and compare effort and feel.
-
Schedule upgrades early
Put framework and SDK upgrades on the roadmap so the app never falls far behind.
How Aranv helps you pick
Hands-on with both
We build and maintain apps in Flutter and React Native, so we compare them from delivery work rather than from feature lists.
A package audit
Before you commit, we check every package your app depends on for recent releases, open issues and support for current OS versions.
Built for your maintainers
We pick the framework your future developers can own, and document the project so an in-house team can take it over.
AI features planned early
If the app needs an assistant, photo recognition or voice input, we confirm plugin support and model hosting before the framework choice is final.

Flutter vs React Native FAQs
-
Is Flutter or React Native better?
Neither is better across the board. React Native is the natural pick for teams that already use React and want native platform components. Flutter suits apps with a strong custom design and teams happy to work in Dart. Both run large production apps.
-
Which performs better, Flutter or React Native?
For typical business apps both perform well. Flutter’s own rendering engine gives very consistent animation, and React Native’s New Architecture removed much of the old bridge overhead. Slow apps are more often caused by app code, oversized images or slow APIs than by the framework.
-
Which framework is easier to hire for?
Hiring is rarely the deciding factor. React Native lets web developers who know React contribute, though mobile experience still matters. Dart is quick to learn for anyone who knows Java, Kotlin or TypeScript. Experience shipping and maintaining store apps counts most.
-
Can we switch from React Native to Flutter or the reverse?
Only by rewriting the app’s interface, because the languages and component models differ. Back-end APIs, designs and test cases carry over. If your current app works, upgrading its framework version is usually a better use of budget than switching.
-
Can Flutter or React Native apps use AI features?
Yes. Calling a hosted model through your own back end works the same in both. On-device features, such as text recognition or the phone makers’ local models, need a plugin or native module, and we check which ones are maintained before planning the feature.
-
Which framework works better for web and desktop too?
One Flutter codebase can build for iOS, Android, the web and the three main desktop systems: Windows, macOS and Linux. React Native focuses on mobile, with Windows and macOS support maintained by Microsoft and web through React Native for Web. For a content-heavy website, a normal web framework is still the better tool.
